ΦΘΟΡΑ

2023 FRANKFURT A.M. / KunstKulturKirche Allerheiligen

description

ΦΘΟΡΑ translates the Earth’s seismic movements into a spatial experience of instability. Ecological devastation, political radicalization, and economic erosion appear as interwoven tremors of a present whose seemingly stable orders are beginning to falter.

At the Allerheiligenkirche, the installation is organized around two millstones set in motion by earthquakes registered across the world. Their frictional sound permeates the church interior, rendering the distant seismic event physically perceptible. Radially arranged, slightly upward-facing compression-driver loudspeakers lend the work the character of an invocation. Whenever an earthquake exceeds magnitude 3, the voice of the Cretan singer Nikos Xylouris emerges from them, asking: “When will the stars be visible in the sky again?”

ΦΘΟΡΑ understands the earthquake neither as an isolated natural event nor as a mere metaphor. It becomes the material trigger for a work in which planetary movement and social disintegration are brought into relation. The installation does not warn of a future catastrophe; it describes a present whose tremors have already begun.

ΦΘΟΡΑ RENDERS REAL-TIME SEISMIC DATA AS AN ACOUSTIC TOPOGRAPHY. THE INSTALLATION TRANSLATES TECTONIC TREMORS INTO SOUND, MAKING AUDIBLE THE SHIFTS SHAPING OUR PRESENT. IT REFLECTS THE ENTANGLEMENT OF ECOLOGICAL COLLAPSE, POLITICAL REGRESSION, AND ECONOMIC EROSION AS FORCES OF SYSTEMIC INSTABILITY WHERE RUPTURE IS STRUCTURAL.
